The UK’s oldest Italian family restaurant, La Lombarda was founded in Aberdeen by Giuseppe (Joe) Berni in 1922. Joe was born of Italian descent on Castle Street in 1902, and grew up in Aberdeen. Realising that the city was not quite ready for Italian cuisine just yet, he initially offered only drinks, cigarettes, sweets and ice cream, but later also sold breakfasts and pies.
