Mercat Cross

The Meeting Place

Originally located opposite the Tolbooth and moved to its present position in 1842, the Mercat Cross has served as a civic meeting point for proclamations, condemnations, and commerce.

The markets and stalls of the Castlegate always centred on the cross, and to this day, it continues to act as a focal point at the heart of the city.
