The Salvation

Army Citadel

A place for

healing

Standing at the head of the Castlegate with a commanding view down Union Street, the Citadel is one of Aberdeen’s most recognisable landmarks.

The Salvation Army commisioned James Souttar who built the imposing ediface between 1893 and 1896. At the time, the site surrounding the modern building was a regular haunt for locally garrisoned soldiers looking for a place to relax and find comfort in the taverns and closes of the Castlegate.

As an organisation that has been instrumental in raising the age of consent and helping the vulnerbale, the choice of location was no accident.

Listen to the participants of the workshop held at the Salvation Army citadel remember war time stories.
